“Like the Necker Hospital in Paris, where the French urological school of Guyon was born, the Department of Urology at Sechenov University is the cradle of Russian urology”

I.M. Epstein

The Fronshten Clinic is the oldest medical and educational institution of Sechenov University, founded in 1866.

During research work team seeks solution large, not well studied problems based on the pathogenetic prerequisites for the development of the disease, the anatomical and physiological features of the organs of the genitourinary system.

The history of the clinic is inextricably linked with the names of such eminent surgeons, scientists and educators as I.P. Matyushenkov, F.I. Sinitsyn, R.M. Fronshtein, I.M. Epstein, Y.A. Pytel and others.

Nowadays, the Department of Urology at Sechenov University is headed by a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Chief Urologist of Russia, Professor Y.G. Alyaev.

Topographic-anatomical and clinical studies of thoracoabdominal surgical approaches for kidney cancer have been developed in the clinic. For the first time in Russia, the technology of kidney tissue restoration was applied through the mobilization of bone marrow reserves and stimulation of stem cell production.

A unique technique of 3D modeling of a affected organ was created, the virtual picture of which is based on the analysis of multispiral computed tomography data. The technology has opened up new opportunities for organ-preserving aids, taking into account the features of tumors, large stones, stenoses of the pelvis-ureteric junction.

New methods of detecting the causes of urinary current disturbances have been introduced - micron-assisted ultrasonic cystourethroscopy and multispiral computational cystic-urethrography, which replaced painful instrumental examinations.

Various types of surgical anastomoses in case of stenosis of the pelvic-ureteric junction have been developed. For the first time in Russia, a layer of epithelial cells was grown in the laboratory from the epithelium of the mucous membrane of the cheek to be transplanted to patients suffering from a urethral stricture. There are studies on creation of an implant for ureteral reconstructions.

In 2010 Institute of Urology and Reproductive Health was found in the clinic. Its aim is to develop the actual problems of diagnostics, treatment and prevention of diseases of the urinary system, as well as disorders of male fertility and sexual function.

The significance of these studies is underlined with the fact that the institute was headed by the Rector of Sechenov University, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor P.V. Glybochko.

The departments of fundamental technologies, radiation diagnostics, morphological studies, functional methods of diagnosis and treatment, the study of infectious processes, reproductive health, as well as laboratory diagnostics and biochemistry are provided for basic research.

Research work is based on the principles of multidisciplinarity, which significantly expands the range of basic and clinical research, as well as its therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities.
Since 1975, the Department of Urology at Sechenov University has been the basis for the advanced training of teachers and practitioners.
